Specialist investigation for heavy periods, irregular cycles and bleeding between periods
If your periods are heavier than they used to be, unpredictable, or you’re bleeding at times you don’t expect, you don’t have to just plan your life around it. Heavy and irregular periods are genuinely common, but common doesn’t mean it has to be ignored — it usually has an identifiable, treatable cause.
Our Heavy & Irregular Periods Clinic combines specialist consultation with pelvic ultrasound and, where needed, further uterine-cavity assessment, so we can usually give you a working diagnosis and a personalised treatment plan without a long chain of separate appointments.
Your care is led by LUNA’s consultant gynaecology team — including Prof Bassel Wattar, Dr Vikram Talaulikar, Ms Esha Saha and Dr Efstathios Theodorou, each a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists — with deep experience investigating and treating bleeding problems of every kind.
Needing to plan your life around your period isn’t something you have to accept as normal.
We start with a detailed history of your bleeding pattern, alongside a specialist pelvic ultrasound to look at your uterus, lining and ovaries. Depending on what we find, we may recommend further assessment — such as saline infusion sonography or outpatient hysteroscopy — to look inside the uterine cavity in more detail. Once we understand the cause, we talk through every treatment option, from medication and hormonal treatments through to minimally invasive or surgical options where appropriate, so the plan reflects what matters most to you.
Some causes of heavy or abnormal bleeding — fibroids, endometrial polyps, or endometriosis, for example — benefit from a more focused pathway once identified. Where that’s the case, we move you directly into the right LUNA clinic, with everything we’ve already found carried forward, rather than starting again.

There’s no single cut-off, but if your bleeding is affecting your daily life, work or sleep, involves passing large clots, or means changing protection every hour or two, it’s worth having assessed — heavy bleeding has several identifiable, treatable causes.
This can range from hormonal fluctuation to polyps, fibroids, infection or, less commonly, other changes in the uterine lining, which is why it’s always worth a proper look rather than assuming it will settle on its own.
Not always — this depends on what your ultrasound shows. When it is needed, we offer it as an outpatient procedure wherever possible, avoiding a hospital admission.
No — fibroids are one common cause, but hormonal imbalance, polyps, adenomyosis and other factors can all play a part, which is why we investigate rather than assume.
Options range from hormonal and non-hormonal medication through to minimally invasive or surgical treatment, depending on the cause. We’ll talk through what’s realistic for your situation and priorities.
