Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a group of physical and emotional symptoms that many women experience in the one to two weeks leading up to their menstrual period due to hormonal changes. These symptoms can range from mild to severe and can impact a woman’s daily life. The most common physical symptoms of PMS include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, and cramps. Emotional symptoms may include irritability, mood swings, anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating.
While PMS is a very common experience, the severity of symptoms can vary greatly from one woman to another. For some, the symptoms are mild and manageable, while for others, the symptoms can be severe and disruptive to daily life. In these cases, a more severe form of PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) may be diagnosed.
Similarly, women the transitional period leading up to menopause, when a woman’s body begins to gradually transition into the next stage of her reproductive life. ​During this time, a woman’s ovaries start to produce less estrogen, causing fluctuations in hormone levels that can lead to a variety of physical and emotional symptoms.
The most common signs of perimenopause include irregular menstrual cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and vaginal dryness. These symptoms can begin as early as a woman’s 30s or 40s.
