Dr Ali Abbara is an Honorary Consultant in Reproductive Endocrinology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust since 2017. He is also an internationally renowned clinical academic conducting research supported by an National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Clinician Scientist Award at Imperial College London. He graduated with honours from St Bartholomews’ and the Royal London medical school in 2004.
As well as completing clinical training in Endocrinology and General Medicine, he has been awarded several fellowships and grants from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Medical Research Council (MRC), and the Wellcome Trust to undertake research in reproductive endocrinology. He completed a PhD in reproductive endocrinology at Imperial College London in 2014 supported by a Wellcome Trust Clinical Training Fellowship. He has presented at numerous international conferences and has been awarded more than twenty post-graduate prizes.
He conducts patient-centred research in reproductive endocrinology and has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed academic articles including in high impact journals such as Lancet, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, Journal of Clinical Investigation and Nature Reviews Endocrinology.
He has a specialist interest in the evaluation of reproductive disorders including the diagnosis of menstrual disturbance due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea, hyperprolactinaemia, androgen excess, obesity-related reproductive disorders, anovulatory disorders, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment, and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism.
